A practical Marathi typing course for beginners
Work through five short lessons: independent vowels, consonants, vowel signs, joined consonants and complete sentences. Each lesson includes an input box with a visible target. Type your answer, compare the converted output and correct it until the target matches. Open the English key hint only when you need it, then reset the exercise and try from memory. These are informal practice activities, with no certificate, account or stored progress.
The exercises accept this website’s phonetic English keys or Marathi entered directly with your device keyboard. Choose one method for a session. If your aim is to learn InScript or a layout required by an examination, use that exact input method and the organiser’s current requirements. Learning this site’s Roman mapping does not teach every physical Marathi layout. The Marathi keyboard reference and layout explanation can help you identify which method you are using.
Keep a familiar written Marathi word nearby while practising. The activities check whether your text matches a supplied target, not whether you understand its pronunciation or grammar. Start slowly enough to notice the difference between two similar letters. If a target contains unfamiliar language, ask a fluent reader to explain it before using the same expression in a real message. A correct sequence of keys is only one part of writing well.
Lesson 1: Marathi typing with independent vowels
Begin with vowels standing on their own. In the first exercise, spaces keep every vowel separate. Type a, then a space, then aa, and compare अ with आ. Continue through i and ii, u and uu, then e, ai, o and au. Repeated letters are meaningful parts of this mapping. They are not a general instruction to hold a physical key down or make every spoken sound longer.
Read each pair before entering the next one. If your output differs, move back to the Roman token and change only that token. For example, replacing i with ii should change इ to ई without disturbing the neighbouring vowels. This makes it easier to identify the cause of an error. On a phone, watch for automatic capitalisation or a keyboard that replaces a space with punctuation; the exercise also compares those characters.
Complete the row once with the hint visible and once without it. Then practise a short familiar word in the English to Marathi writing editor; aaii produces आई in this converter. Do not treat the exercise as an exhaustive inventory of Marathi vowels. The keyboard page lists all supported vowel tokens, including additional signs used in particular spellings. Return here when the short and long pairs feel distinct.

This lesson concentrates on contrasts that are easy to lose in Roman writing. The target pairs त with ट, थ with ठ, ल with ळ and श with ष. Use ta and Ta for the first pair, then tha and Tha. Capital T selects a different consonant; it does not simply capitalise the displayed Marathi word. The final a keeps each practice unit separate and makes the mapping easier to inspect.
Next compare la with La, then sha with Sha. Read the resulting Marathi letters rather than checking only whether you typed the English hint correctly. If you repeatedly confuse one pair, practise just those two tokens in the editor before repeating the complete row. Keep your hand movement deliberate, especially around Shift. A device’s automatic capitalisation can alter a supported sequence, so correct its input if the first word behaves differently from later words.
After matching the row, try Topii and shaaLaa in the editor and compare टोपी and शाळा. These words put the distinctions inside a larger unit. Avoid replacing every lowercase letter with a capital as a general fix: only the documented tokens have the intended meanings. For a letter outside this exercise, consult the complete consonant and vowel key chart. Learn one new contrast at a time instead of memorising the whole table in one sitting.

A vowel after a consonant usually becomes a dependent sign, often called a matra. This exercise holds the consonant क constant while changing its vowel. Compare ka with kaa, ki with kii and ku with kuu. Keeping the same base letter lets you see which mark moved or changed. The target is a practice row of syllables, not a sentence, so focus on each unit and the single spaces between units.
Enter the consonant first, then its vowel token. For ki, the displayed ि appears before क, but the input order is still k followed by i. The Unicode explanation of Devanagari vowel signs describes how stored characters and their displayed shapes differ. You do not need to reorder your keys to imitate the final visual arrangement. A font can also change the appearance of a combination without changing its underlying text.
To practise a correction, first type the row with ki where kii belongs. Compare the two visible syllables, then add the missing i in the input. Finally reset and enter the complete row again. If you use the clickable palette in the main editor, select क followed by ा to build का. The palette inserts actual characters at your selection; it does not decide which vowel sign makes a word correct.

ka kaa ki kii ku kuu ke kai ko kauLesson 4: Marathi typing conjuncts and the virama
Two adjacent consonant tokens can join when the first consonant has no intervening vowel. Compare kata with kta in the target. The first gives कत; the second gives क्त. This difference explains why a missing a inside a Roman word may create an unexpected joined form. Adding a space is not an equivalent correction, because it splits the written word. Decide whether you need a vowel or a joined consonant.
The ^ key applies an explicit virama after a live consonant. Type k^ to obtain क्, then compare k^i, which becomes कि because the following vowel replaces that virama. The exercise puts both forms beside one another so that you can inspect the transition. A virama is a character operation, not a command that guarantees a particular ligature shape in every font. Review the complete rendered syllable after editing it.
Finish the row with namaskaar and inspect नमस्कार. The s and k join within the word. Once the target matches, reset and try entering only the final word without the hint. If it fails, compare the middle consonants and the long aa before changing unrelated letters. The English to Marathi correction workflow explains how to repair a larger draft while protecting manual edits. Use that workflow when a single example grows into several sentences.

kata kta k^ k^i namaskaarLesson 5: Marathi typing practice with complete sentences
The final target combines a greeting and a short practice statement: नमस्कार. मी मराठी शिकतो. Follow the displayed wording exactly for this matching activity. A real speaker’s wording can differ with context and grammatical form, so do not treat this single target as the only way to introduce yourself. The purpose here is to carry familiar vowels, consonants, spaces and punctuation through a complete line without losing accuracy.
Enter the greeting first and pause at the full stop. Check the long vowel in the next word and the capital T inside maraaThii before finishing the line. If the exercise still reports a mismatch, compare spaces and punctuation as well as letters. An extra trailing space is enough to differ from the target. Correct one location at a time so that you know which change solved the problem.
Reset and repeat the sentence without opening the hint. Then move to a 30-second Marathi typing test using the same input method. The timed test has its own passage and scoring rules; the sentence exercise is simply an exact-match check. Do not compare the two as if they awarded the same score. If timing makes you rush, return to this untimed exercise until the sequence feels comfortable again.

namaskaar. mii maraaThii shikato.Turn Marathi typing lessons into a repeatable routine
Choose a small practice window you can repeat, rather than a promised number of days to mastery. Start by reviewing the previous session’s most frequent mistake. Complete one exercise slowly, take one short test and write down the letter pair or syllable that caused trouble. On the next visit, practise that particular contrast before attempting a longer passage. The site does not store lesson progress, so keep any personal notes yourself.
Compare timed attempts only when passage, duration and input method are similar. Accuracy is useful when it helps you find a recurring error; chasing a larger speed number while changing all the conditions makes progress harder to interpret. If you are preparing for an exam, check its official keyboard, font, timing, correction policy and scoring method separately. This course offers practice, not an assessment accepted by an examination authority.
Use your practice in everyday Marathi writing
Open the Marathi typing editor for everyday messages and write a short note of your own. Read it once for meaning and once for characters. If you correct the Marathi output directly, later changes to the Roman input keep that manual work protected until you explicitly apply a new conversion. Download important text before leaving. A saved browser draft is useful, but it is not a synchronised backup or a permanent revision history.
When you copy the note into another application, check line breaks and choose a font that supports Devanagari. This tool creates Unicode plain text, not legacy font encodings or formatted documents. Conversion runs locally after the page loads, while opening or reloading the site still needs a network connection. Have important names and formal documents reviewed by a fluent Marathi reader. Matching the exercises demonstrates the supplied key sequences, not independent language approval of everything you write.
